Question 1

What transformer is used in a commercial building?

Accepted Answer

Commercial office, retail, and mixed-use buildings are predominantly served by dry-type transformers for indoor electrical rooms — no oil handling or containment required — with pad-mounted units used for outdoor or site-level distribution ahead of the building's indoor equipment.

Question 2

Dry-type vs pad-mounted for commercial sites?

Accepted Answer

Dry-type transformers are the standard choice for indoor commercial electrical rooms — offices, retail space, mixed-use buildings — due to their indoor safety profile and low maintenance. Pad-mounted transformers are specified for outdoor, site-level distribution feeding the building rather than for indoor placement.

Question 3

What DOE efficiency rules apply?

Accepted Answer

Commercial distribution transformers are built to comply with DOE 2016 efficiency standards, supporting building energy-efficiency requirements and certification targets.

Question 4

How are noise and floor space handled indoors?

Accepted Answer

Dry-type transformers for commercial buildings are engineered for low operating noise appropriate to electrical rooms near occupied space, and sized for a compact footprint that minimizes the area taken from leasable or usable floor space.

Question 5

What kVA for an office/retail building?

Accepted Answer

Sizing is determined by the building's actual tenant load, single-phase electronic load mix, and K-factor requirement rather than a fixed commercial rating — our engineering team sizes each unit to your project's specific load profile.
