Transformer Inrush Current and Protection Review

Review it separately from steady load current when coordinating protection and switching.

Transformer inrush current is a transient that can occur during energization. Review it separately from steady load current when coordinating protection and switching.

Read the energization waveform

At switch-on, the magnetic operating condition depends on the voltage point of closing and residual core flux. The core can briefly enter a high magnetizing-current condition. The resulting transient decays toward steady operation. Its peak, duration and asymmetry depend on the transformer, source and switching conditions.

Collect the relevant data

Provide rated kVA, voltages, winding connection, source impedance and the intended switching arrangement. Ask for design-specific energization information. When measurements are available, keep the waveform, sampling settings, supply voltage and switching time with the event record.

Waveform, sampling settings, supply voltage and switching time, when measurements are available.

Coordinate the protection study

The protection engineer reviews the transient with fault and load conditions to select appropriate settings and operating logic. Record the approved arrangement in the commissioning package.

Separate operating conditions

Rated load current, energization inrush and fault current describe different conditions. Use design-specific data and actual network conditions in the protection review; there is no single inrush multiplier for every transformer.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is there one multiplier for every transformer?

Use design-specific information and the actual network conditions in the protection review.

What records are useful after energization?

Keep approved settings, event records and commissioning observations with the asset documentation.
