How to Read a Single Line Diagram
Trace the source through switching and transformation to the loads, then connect each equipment tag to its detailed schedule.
A single line diagram shows the main electrical connections and ratings in a simplified form. Trace the source through switching and transformation to the loads, then connect each equipment tag to its detailed schedule.
Trace the power path
Begin at the utility or generating source. Identify incoming switching, the transformer, outgoing switchgear and feeders. Use equipment tags to connect the diagram with drawings and specifications. The drawing legend defines the symbols used on that project.

This simplified diagram is a reading aid. Follow the project's current legend, equipment schedules and approved drawings for design and procurement.
Read the transformer block
Record kVA or MVA, primary and secondary voltage, frequency, connection and impedance where shown. Identify the neutral and grounding arrangement. Missing data should be supplied in the equipment schedule before the drawing is used for procurement or system studies.
| Item or condition | What to compare | Input or result |
|---|---|---|
| Source | Voltage and available fault data | Utility or generation record |
| Transformer | Capacity, ratio and connection | Equipment schedule |
| Load feeders | Demand and protective devices | Circuit and load schedule |
Create a coordinated enquiry
Attach the current diagram revision and a load schedule to the request. Mark the transformer being purchased and include the utility interface, cable termination, protection and installation requirements. Keep the approved drawing reference with the final quotation.
Read transformer symbols using the project legend, compare wye and delta winding connections, and review transformer capacity requirements alongside the load schedule.
Frequently Asked Questions
Why is only one line shown for a three-phase circuit?
The diagram simplifies the system connection. Associated drawings and schedules supply conductor and installation details.
Which drawing revision should I use?
Use the project-controlled revision that matches the current load, supply and protection design.
