kVA to kW Conversion with Power Factor Examples
Compare worked examples and prepare consistent power requirements for a transformer enquiry.
Convert between apparent power in kVA and active power in kW using the load power factor. Enter the specified or measured factor explicitly so the result reflects the operating load. Learn what kVA means on a transformer rating, or read how power factor affects transformer capacity.
kVA and kW calculator
Enter a power value and power factor to convert apparent and active power.
Formula: kW = kVA × power factor
Planning calculation only. Confirm the operating power factor and load profile with the project electrical specification.
Enter power factor explicitly
Apparent power is expressed in kVA and active power in kW. Use kW = kVA × power factor, or kVA = kW / power factor. This calculator requires a power factor greater than zero and no more than one, and identifies whether the entered power is kW or kVA.
Compare the same active load
An illustrative 400 kW load at 0.8 power factor requires 500 kVA. At 0.95 power factor, it requires about 421.1 kVA. Use the measured or specified operating power factor and the load profile when developing the equipment duty.
| Item or condition | Calculation | Result |
|---|---|---|
| 400 kW at PF 0.80 | 400 / 0.80 | 500 kVA |
| 400 kW at PF 0.95 | 400 / 0.95 | 421.1 kVA |
| 500 kVA at PF 0.90 | 500 × 0.90 | 450 kW |
Prepare the next sizing step
Record normal and peak demand, starting conditions and planned expansion separately. Send these inputs with the calculated apparent power. The sizing guide connects the calculation to standard ratings, duty and project-specific thermal review.
Frequently asked questions
Why is kVA usually higher than kW?
When power factor is below one, apparent power exceeds active power. At unity power factor, the numerical values are equal.
Should I use a fixed 0.8 power factor?
Use the power factor from the actual load specification or measurement. The 0.8 value on this page belongs to the worked example.
