Distribution Transformer Fundamentals
Step Down Transformers for Power Distribution
Compare voltage, current and installation needs before selecting an industrial distribution transformer.
A step down transformer reduces AC voltage for downstream equipment. Compare voltage, current and installation needs before selecting an industrial distribution transformer.
Match the supply and load
Record the available primary voltage and the required secondary voltage at the load. Check frequency, phase arrangement and whether a neutral is needed. The load schedule provides the capacity requirement and operating profile.
For an ideal transformer, the voltage ratio follows the winding turns ratio. The primary side has more turns than the secondary side in a step down design. The diagram shows an illustrative 13.8 kV to 480 V relationship; actual winding and line values depend on the selected three-phase connection.
| Item or condition | What to compare | Input or result |
|---|---|---|
| Primary input | Available supply voltage | Utility or facility data |
| Secondary output | Required load voltage | Equipment nameplates |
| Current and capacity | kVA, phase, voltage | Load schedule |

Check current after the voltage change
At the same apparent power, lowering voltage raises current. An illustrative 500 kVA balanced three-phase output at 480 V is about 601 A. Use the current result when coordinating cables and switchgear with the electrical designer.
Illustrative 480 V, three-phase example
I = 1000 × kVA / (√3 × VLL)
500 kVA → approximately 601 A
Balanced three-phase calculation. Confirm actual voltage, power factor, harmonics, motor starting and applicable loading rules for the project.
Calculate transformer currentChoose an installation family
A ground-level cable-fed installation may use a pad-mounted family; an overhead network may use pole-mounted equipment. Indoor projects can start with dry-type products. Review the chosen model's connection diagram and site requirements.
Pad-mounted transformers
For ground-level, cable-fed distribution. Check the site layout and primary and secondary cable interfaces.
Pole-mounted transformers
For overhead networks. Confirm the utility mounting arrangement and phase configuration.
Dry-type transformers
For indoor installations. Review ventilation, enclosure and fire strategy requirements.
